Our PLA Injection Molding Process

At Baiwe Molding, we follow precise guidelines to ensure the highest quality PLA parts, leveraging advanced technology and industry best practices. Our process includes:

  • Material Drying: PLA is hygroscopic and must be dried to a moisture content below 0.02% (200 ppm) using a desiccant dryer with a dew point of -40°F (-40°C). Drying temperatures are carefully controlled, typically not exceeding 130°F (55°C) for amorphous pellets, to prevent material degradation and ensure optimal performance during molding.

  • Mold Temperature Control: Depending on the desired morphology (amorphous or crystalline), mold temperatures are set accordingly. For amorphous parts, mold temperatures are kept below 75°F (24°C), suitable for applications below 120°F (50°C). For crystalline parts, temperatures above 180°F (82°C), preferably 220°F (105°C), are used to enhance durability for higher-temperature applications.

  • Injection and Holding Pressures: We use optimal injection pressures (8,000–15,000 psi or 55–100 MPa) and holding pressures tailored to each PLA grade to ensure proper mold filling and minimal warpage.

  • Cooling and Ejection: Parts are cooled within the mold to achieve the desired crystallinity, with closed mold times of 40–60 seconds depending on the cycle type. Parts are then ejected carefully to avoid damage.

Our experienced team monitors each step to ensure all parts meet stringent quality standards. We work with various PLA formulations, including those with glass or mineral fillers and PLA/PC hybrids, to meet your specific needs.
